Call to Action

To address the state of education for African American/Black students in the California Community College system, the Village Demands created a six-point Call to Action.

The six-point Village Demands Call to Action for African American Community College and Statewide Leaders is as follows.

Examine and interrogate the systems, structures, actions, policies, procedures and practices that impede the success of Black students.

  1. Examine and interrogate the systems, structures, actions, policies, procedures and practices that impede the success of Black students.

  2. Adopt the ideas, strategies, and approaches being developed by this coalition to advance the collective agenda of Black faculty, staff, and students.

  3. Interrupt the cycle of business as usual on our campuses and to call our campus constituents and leaders to action by adopting these strategies that would foster the transition from anti-Blackness to a pro-Black educational system.

  4. Mandate classroom restructuring to non-Eurocentric models that are conducive for adult learning purposes.

  5. Implementation of a Statewide Faculty Institute focusing on increasing racial literacy, critical consciousness, and cultural fluency in educational organizations.

  6. Create a coalition of interested parties where we mobilize and communicate the needs of the Black and African American community through webinars, outreach, collaboration and partnerships.
